Knocked Up - Jo

From the same write / director of '40 year old virgin', this movie was OK. I did laugh out loud quite a few times, and the movie was interesting enough to follow, just very forgettable.

The movie is generally about a girl, Alison Scott (played by Katherine Heigl), who has a promising career and everything going for her. She goes out to celebrate a promotion, where she has a one night stand with a guy, Ben Stone (played by Seth Rogen, and let me also point out that their play on names was too obvious, I mean, 'Ben Stone'?) who is very carefree about life, and doesn't really do much aside from hanging out with his friends and smoking pot. After their one night stand, she falls pregnant. This plot line then flows through the movie to deliver funny situations, and some emotional sub plots about having a baby, the importance of family, and all that other warm and fuzzy stuff. The moral of the movie at the end seemed to be, 'have a baby, sure - but don't get married'...

The movie tried very hard to be an equality of humour and morals. It did, to an extent, achieve that, and I personally thought that they covered many 'relationship' situations quite well, in a generalised sense. Some people may have related to the fact that women get hormonal and sensitive, where men seemed to be laissez-faire and insensitive. The ever going 'men are from mars, women are from venue' sentiment was ever present throughout.

They had some crude humour, but nothing out of today's comedic standards. They also tried to throw in a few shock factors, like the scene where she's giving birth (those who have seen the movie will know exactly what scene I mean) which was crass and made me never want to have kids! There were funny one-liners and scenes, but nothing too charming. The 40 year old virgin was more a comedic feat as Steve Carell's character (and Steve's acting) was more engaging and sincere. Katherine and Seth's matching lacked chemistry, and the acting was very ordinary. Their side kicks played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, who played a married couple (Leslie's character related as sister to Katherine's character), had more charm and were funnier to watch.
Worth watching, but wait for the DVD. (I scored free movie tickets, so it was all good)

My rating: 5/5.
