this and ronin are the only 2 movies that robert de niro for me really shines. although he basically does the same performance in every film he's donewhich isnt to say that al pachino does anything different either, heck i think the same can be said about most actors in hollywood. i have yet to find an actor that totally transends themselves as a performer, that really transforms the way they approach a scene.
having said that this is still a brilliantly executed film from start to finish. the precision that mann brings to this film is short of extraordinary and the entire cast is a perfect fit for each of the characters.
i think there's something about a heist film that just screams to the thug in all of us about high octane thrills and making a fast buck.
9/10 - film
8/10 - features - you finally get to see de niro and pachino face to face in a single frame. why mann chose not to have at least one frame to suggest this is beyond me as the diner which they shot still has a big plaque commemorating their union in film history.
